🎨 Why Are the Ninja Turtles Named After Artists?
The four main turtles are named after famous Italian Renaissance artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. The names give the characters an unusual combination of martial arts action and art history.
The creators chose these names partly for their humor and contrast. Instead of giving the turtles traditional ninja names, they gave them the names of well-known artists. This playful idea became one of the franchise’s most recognizable features.
Their signature mask colors also help fans tell them apart in many modern adaptations:
- 🔵 Leonardo wears blue.
- 🔴 Raphael wears red.
- 🟣 Donatello wears purple.
- 🟠 Michelangelo wears orange.
Earlier comic appearances and some adaptations have handled colors differently, so the familiar color associations are most closely linked to the popular animated and toy versions.
